  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Allen C. Morris.

  3  

  4         WHEREAS, while covering the Legislature in 1941 for the

  5  Miami Herald, Allen Morris developed a fascination for the

  6  workings and people of Florida government, and

  7         WHEREAS, in 1947 and biennially thereafter, he

  8  published The Florida Handbook, the comprehensive and

  9  acknowledged authority on Florida history, commerce, and

10  government, and

11         WHEREAS, while a freelance journalist, Allen Morris

12  wrote the syndicated "Cracker Politics" column, through which

13  he provided an astute and sweeping chronicle of Florida

14  political history from 1943-1966, and

15         WHEREAS, while still a journalist, Allen Morris became

16  a consultant on the Rules of the House of Representatives and

17  often noted that it was through respect for the Rules that we

18  demonstrate respect for the institution itself, and

19         WHEREAS, Allen Morris was elected by the Members of the

20  House of Representatives as Clerk in 1966, responsible for

21  recording sessions and providing parliamentary counsel, and

22  was subsequently elected and held office for 10 terms and 77

23  sessions, and

24         WHEREAS, Allen Morris served as Clerk Emeritus while

25  continuing his historical writings from 1986 to 1993, and

26         WHEREAS, in thought, temperament, and consideration for

27  others, Allen Morris represented all that is good and worthy

28  about this great institution of which we are a part, and

29         WHEREAS, Allen C. Morris, beloved teacher, counselor,

30  and friend to this Chamber and to generations of Florida

 1  political leaders, died on April 22, 2002, in his

 2  ninety-second year, NOW, THEREFORE,

 3  

 4  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

 5  Florida:

 6  

 7         That the House of Representatives mourns the passing of

 8  its faithful servant Allen Morris and acknowledges his vast

 9  and timeless contributions to the people of Florida.

10         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

11  be presented to the family of Allen Morris as a tangible token

12  of the sentiments expressed herein.
