2 A resolution recognizing May 2002 as "Healthy
3 Pet Month."

5 WHEREAS, approximately 60 percent of all American
6 households include pets with whom close ties are developed and
7 strong relationships forged and who are loved as members of
8 the family, and
9 WHEREAS, an equally strong relationship between
10 veterinarians and pets is vital to the health of pets in order
11 that both minor and major problems might be diagnosed and
12 treated, and
13 WHEREAS, eight million dogs and 19 million cats do not
14 have access to veterinary care on a regular basis, and
15 WHEREAS, the spring and summer months are the prime
16 season for infection by ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas, putting
17 pets at great risk of Lyme disease, heartworms, and similar
18 threats to their health, and
19 WHEREAS, many of these sometimes-silent, potentially
20 fatal diseases might well be prevented by early detection
21 through regular care by veterinarians, NOW, THEREFORE,
22
23 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
24 Florida:

26 That the House of Representatives recognizes May 2002
27 as "Healthy Pet Month" and urges all pet owners to be aware of
28 the increased risks the spring and summer months pose to the
29 health of their pets, to take precautionary measures to
30 protect their pets against potential illnesses during this
