1 House Resolution
2 A resolution commemorating the life and work of
3 Dr. Gwendolyn Brown.
4 WHEREAS, not content to have children just learn to
5 read, long-time educator Dr. Gwendolyn Brown was driven by a
6 passion to instill in her students a love of reading, and
7 WHEREAS, Dr. Brown earned a bachelor's degree from
8 Bethune-Cookman College, a master's degree from the University
9 of Northern Colorado, and a doctoral degree from Nova
10 Southeastern University before returning to her native Miami
11 to devote her 37-year career to teaching in the Miami-Dade
12 County public school system, and
13 WHEREAS, with a reputation for "getting to kids" and
14 for stressing that reading was a gift, Dr. Brown not only made
15 reading a priority in her home as well as in the classroom,
16 but also reached out to encourage and help neighborhood
17 children learn to read, and
18 WHEREAS, Dr. Brown taught in several schools throughout
19 the county but is perhaps most fondly remembered for her last
20 13 years as a reading specialist at Douglas MacArthur Senior
21 High School South, an alternative school where she developed a
22 reading mentoring program and made a marked improvement in her
23 students' ability to read, and
24 WHEREAS, during her stellar career in education, Dr.
25 Brown also served as an adjunct or part-time professor at Nova
26 Southeastern University, Florida Memorial College, Barry
27 University, and Miami-Dade Community College, and
28 WHEREAS, it is noted with deep sadness that when death
29 claimed Dr. Gwendolyn Brown on April 23, 2002, the Miami-Dade
30 community lost an outstanding educator and an avid promoter

1 and champion of reading as a means of opening new worlds and
2 reaching unrealized potential, NOW, THEREFORE,
3
4 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
5 Florida:

7 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
8 deliberations to extend its condolences to the family,
9 friends, and community of Dr. Gwendolyn Brown.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
11 be presented to each of the three sons of Dr. Gwendolyn Brown
12 as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
