A memorial to the Congress of the United States, urging |

Congress to adopt House Resolution 505, or similar |
4
|
legislation, to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act |
5
|
to provide for the adjustment of the status of alien |
6
|
children who arrive in the United States without their |
7
|
parents and to establish a panel of advisors to assist |
8
|
unaccompanied alien children in immigration proceedings. |

|
|

|
WHEREAS, under current policy of the United States |
11
|
Immigration and Naturalization Service, certain minors coming |
12
|
into the United States are subject to being handcuffed, |
13
|
shackled, and even placed in solitary confinement, and |
14
|
WHEREAS, House Resolution 505, the Alien Unaccompanied |
15
|
Minor Adjustment and Protection Act of 2001, would not only |
16
|
provide for a more humane treatment of certain minor alien |
17
|
children, but would also allow them to have access to family |
18
|
within the United States and provide them with legal assistance |
19
|
and guardians ad litem, and |
20
|
WHEREAS, this act provides a means by which to assist these |
21
|
children who have dreamed of a better life and who have risked |
22
|
their lives to come to a country of freedom and opportunity, |
23
|
NOW, THEREFORE, |

Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |

|
That the Congress of the United States is requested to |
28
|
amend the Immigration and Nationality Act and enact House |
29
|
Resolution 505, the Alien Unaccompanied Minor Adjustment and |
30
|
Protection Act of 2001, or similar legislation, to provide |
31
|
assistance to alien unaccompanied minor children in immigration |
32
|
proceedings. |

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be |
34
|
dispatched to the President of the United States, to the |
35
|
President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the |
36
|
United States House of Representatives, and to each member of |
37
|
the Florida delegation to the United States Congress. |
