  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing March 27, 2003, as

  3         Florida Doctors' Day.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Doctors' Day was first observed in 1933 by a

  6  group of physicians' spouses in Winder, Georgia, and the day

  7  also commemorates the first administration of anesthesia by a

  8  physician in 1842, and

  9         WHEREAS, President George Bush thought so highly of

10  physicians that he designated an official day of recognition

11  for them in 1990, and

12         WHEREAS, most physicians endure long and unpredictable

13  hours and many must cope with the conflicting demands of work

14  and family life, and

15         WHEREAS, Doctors' Day provides an opportunity for

16  physicians and patients to set aside the distractions of

17  today's often contentious health care environment and focus on

18  the "extraordinary calling of medicine," and

19         WHEREAS, the mission of the Florida Medical Association

20  is "to serve as an advocate for physicians and their patients

21  to promote the public health, to ensure high standards in

22  medical education and ethics, and to enhance the quality and

23  availability of health care," and

24         WHEREAS, the Florida Medical Association has sponsored

25  the "Doctor of the Day" program for many years, providing a

26  volunteer physician every day of the regular legislative

27  session, in both the Senate and the House of Representatives,

28  to care for the legislators, staff, and others in the Capitol

29  requiring medical services, and

  1         WHEREAS, physicians daily devote their lives to the

  2  care of citizens in the great State of Florida and make unique

  3  and special contributions to our society and culture, and

  4         WHEREAS, over the years, the red carnation has become

  5  the symbol of Doctors' Day, denoting the qualities of love,

  6  charity, sacrifice, bravery, and courage, and is today being

  7  worn by physicians and their spouses visiting the Capitol,

  8  NOW, THEREFORE,

10  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

11

12         That the Senate applauds our devoted medical

13  professionals and recognizes March 27, 2003, as Florida

14  Doctors' Day in honor of the selfless service and immense

15  talent of Florida's physicians.
