  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commending Valdaishia Wring, who

  3         captured first place and set seven national

  4         records at the 2002 Fitness Authority National

  5         Championship.

  6  

  7         WHEREAS, Valdaishia Wring, a seventh-grader at Lee

  8  Middle School, achieved a triumphant victory at the second

  9  annual Fitness Authority National Championship, held in Miami

10  in August, and

11         WHEREAS, Valdaishia was one of only 40 athletes, ages 6

12  to 18, who qualified for the nationals, and

13         WHEREAS, competing against 13-year-olds, as well as

14  other 12-year-olds, Valdaishia set national records in seven

15  of the 10 events that comprise the competition, and

16         WHEREAS, to earn the right to compete in Miami,

17  Valdaishia trained 4 days a week for a year at the Lee County

18  Boys & Girls Club, then won a state event and a regional

19  competition in Atlanta, and

20         WHEREAS, in recognition of her achievement, Valdaishia

21  and her coach received a 2-day, all-expenses-paid trip to the

22  White House, and she heard President George Bush comment on

23  the feats that she and the seven other 2002 Fitness Authority

24  national champions had performed, as well as taking her first

25  plane ride, and

26         WHEREAS, Valdaishia will again be eligible to compete

27  in the same division at next year's event, and

28         WHEREAS, the coach who spotted her potential,

29  LeDondrick Rowe, told reporters, "You might be talking to the

30  next Marion Jones. She can run", and

 1         WHEREAS, her outstanding performance and attitude bring

 2  honor to her family, her coaches and school, and her

 3  community, and

 4         WHEREAS, Valdaishia Wring has set an example for other

 5  student athletes to follow in achieving physical fitness, and

 6         WHEREAS, Valdaishia is representative of the importance

 7  placed on physical fitness and the fine results achieved by

 8  coaches throughout the State of Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

 9  

10  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

11  

12         That the Florida Senate recognizes the outstanding

13  feats of Valdaishia Wring, who took first place at the 2002

14  Fitness Authority National Championship held last August in

15  Miami and set seven national records in the process, and

16  thereby brought honor to this state. The Senate commends

17  12-year-old Valdaishia for her year-long training effort and

18  for her poise in representing the Lee County Boys & Girls Club

19  at the White House ceremony honoring her and two other Fort

20  Myers residents who placed well in the competition.

21         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution,

22  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to

23  Valdaishia Wring and her coach, LeDondrick Rowe, as a token of

24  the sentiments expressed herein.
