11  Senator Crist moved the following amendment:

13         Senate Amendment (with title amendment) 
14         On page 2, between lines 6 and 7,
15  
16  insert:  
17         Section 2.  Subsection (1) of section 946.520, Florida
18  Statutes, is amended to read:
19         946.520  Assignment of inmates by Department of
20  Corrections.--
21         (1)  The department shall exert its best efforts to
22  assign inmates to the corporation, or the private sector
23  business authorized under this part, who have not less than 1
24  nor more than 5 years remaining before their tentative release
25  dates. Beginning January 1, 2004 1998, the department shall
26  maintain the assignment of at least 60 percent of inmates to
27  all correctional work programs collectively to the
28  corporation, or to the private sector business authorized
29  under this part, who have less than 10 years remaining before
30  their tentative release dates. This 60-percent requirement
31  does not apply to any correctional work program, or private

 2  individual an institution for any year in which, as of January
 3  1 of such that year, the average years remaining before the

12  insert:
13         amending s. 946.520, F.S.; deferring a
