  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the Department of

  3         Corrections; amending s. 944.10, F.S.;

  4         authorizing the department to contract with

  5         federal, state, or local governments to provide

  6         security services for detention or commitment

  7         facilities; providing an effective date.

  8  

  9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10  

11         Section 1.  Subsection (7) of section 944.10, Florida

12  Statutes, is amended to read:

13         944.10  Department of Corrections to provide buildings;

14  sale and purchase of land; contracts to provide services and

15  inmate labor.--

16         (7)(a)  The department may enter into contracts with

17  federal, state, or local governmental entities or subdivisions

18  to provide services and inmate labor for the construction of

19  buildings, parks, roads, any detention or commitment

20  facilities, or any other project deemed to be appropriate by

21  the Department of Corrections, which includes site acquisition

22  or preparation, management, or construction of such projects.

23  The department may charge fees for providing such services.

24  All fees collected must be placed in the Correctional Work

25  Program Trust Fund.

26         (b)  The department may enter into contracts with

27  federal, state, or local governmental entities or subdivisions

28  to provide security services for detention or commitment

29  facilities. The department may charge fees for providing such

30  services. All fees collected must be placed in the

31  Correctional Work Program Trust Fund.

 1         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2003.
