  2         An act relating to the Medal of Heroism;

  3         providing that designated persons are eligible

  4         to receive the Medal of Heroism; providing for

  5         application to the Governor; providing an

  6         effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9  

10         Section 1.  (1)  The Governor may award a Medal of

11  Heroism of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances,

12  to a law enforcement, correctional, or correctional probation

13  officer, as defined in section 943.10(14), Florida Statutes; a

14  firefighter, as defined in section 112.191(1)(b), Florida

15  Statutes; an emergency medical technician, as defined in

16  section 401.23(11), Florida Statutes; or a paramedic, as

17  defined in section 401.23(17), Florida Statutes. A recipient

18  must have distinguished himself or herself conspicuously by

19  gallantry and intrepidity; must have risked his or her life

20  deliberately above and beyond the call of duty while

21  performing duty in his or her respective position; and must

22  have engaged in hazardous or perilous activities to preserve

23  lives with the knowledge that such activities might result in

24  great personal harm.

25         (2)  A candidate or person seeking to nominate a

26  candidate for the award must make written application to the

27  Governor. The Governor may refer an application to any public

28  or private entity for advice and recommendations regarding the

29  application.

30         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2003.
