  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to drug prescriptions; creating

  3         s. 456.42, F.S.; requiring written drug

  4         prescriptions to be legibly printed or typed,

  5         to contain certain information, and to be dated

  6         and signed by the prescribing practitioner on

  7         the day issued; providing an effective date.

  8  

  9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10  

11         Section 1.  Section 456.42, Florida Statutes, is

12  created to read:

13         456.42  Written prescriptions for medicinal drugs.--A

14  written prescription for a medicinal drug issued by a health

15  care practitioner licensed by law to prescribe such drug must

16  be legibly printed or typed so as to be capable of being

17  understood by the pharmacist filling the prescription; must

18  contain the name of the prescribing practitioner, the name and

19  strength of the drug prescribed, the quantity of the drug

20  prescribed in both textual and numerical formats, and the

21  directions for use of the drug; must be dated with the month

22  written out in textual letters; and must be signed by the

23  prescribing practitioner on the day when issued.

24         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2003.

29  The Committee Substitute adds more specificity to the
    requirements for written prescriptions for medicinal drugs.
