  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to special observances;

  3         creating s. 683.195, F.S.; designating the

  4         month of January of each year as "Florida

  5         Jewish History Month"; providing for a

  6         proclamation by the Governor to that effect;

  7         providing an effective date.

  8  

  9         WHEREAS, among the myriad of ethnic groups that have

10  passed through Florida since 1513, Jews are notable for

11  remaining in the state and retaining and asserting their

12  ethnic identity, and

13         WHEREAS, like other ethnic groups, Jews have actively

14  participated in shaping the destiny of Florida by bringing to

15  civic life their visions for freedom and democracy and their

16  creativity, thus leaving their footprints across the state,

17  and

18         WHEREAS, Florida Jewish History Month is a time to

19  focus attention on the tremendous contributions Floridian Jews

20  have made in every area of the development of our state, NOW,

21  THEREFORE,

23  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

24  

25         Section 1.  Section 683.195, Florida Statutes, is

26  created to read:

27         683.195  Florida Jewish History Month.--

28         (1)  The month of January of each year is designated as

29  "Florida Jewish History Month."

30         (2)  The Governor may issue a proclamation annually

31  designating the month of January as "Florida Jewish History

 1  Month" and calling upon the citizens of the state to observe

 2  the occasion.

 3         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

 4  law.
