  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing May 2003 as "Stroke

  3         Awareness Month" in the State of Florida.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, stroke is the leading cause of death and

  6  disability of adults in the United States, annually causing

  7  more than 600,000 deaths and permanently impairing more than

  8  4.5 million, and

  9         WHEREAS, stroke annually kills more women in the United

10  States than breast cancer and the stroke death rate is greater

11  among African Americans and senior citizens than other

12  Americans, and

13         WHEREAS, the majority of Americans are not aware of the

14  risks of stroke or the symptoms of an impending stroke, and

15         WHEREAS, the symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness

16  or weakening of muscles in the face, arm, or leg, especially

17  on one side of the body; sudden confusion, impairment of

18  speech, or incomprehension of what is being said or done;

19  sudden impairment of vision; sudden inability to ambulate,

20  coordinate motor functions, or maintain balance; and

21  dizziness, and sudden severe headaches without any apparent

22  cause, and

23         WHEREAS, new and effective ways of treating stroke have

24  been developed to diminish the impairments of victims, but

25  much more research is needed to advance discovery of improved

26  medical care to reduce the risk of stroke and its damaging

27  effects, and

28         WHEREAS, the National Stroke Association is petitioning

29  legislatures throughout the nation to designate the month of

30  May 2003 as "Stroke Awareness Month" to promote greater

31  knowledge and understanding of the risks and symptoms of

 1  stroke among the American people, and to encourage more

 2  research into improved medical care to reduce such risks and

 3  the damaging effects of strokes, NOW, THEREFORE,

 4  

 5  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 6  

 7         That the Florida Senate recognizes the month of May

 8  2003 as "Stroke Awareness Month" in the State of Florida.
