2 A resolution honoring the memory of Senator
3 George G. Kirkpatrick, Jr.

5 WHEREAS, Senator George G. Kirkpatrick, Jr., served
6 with distinction in the Florida Senate from 1980 through 2000,
7 and
8 WHEREAS, it is most appropriate that the Florida Senate
9 commemorate the passing of one of its former members who
10 served his district and the State of Florida so admirably,
11 NOW, THEREFORE,

13 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
14
15 That this legislative body does pause in its
16 deliberations to pay its respects to the late Senator George
17 G. Kirkpatrick, Jr., and that the Florida Senate in session
18 assembled does record this testimonial of esteem and
19 bereavement:
20 IN MEMORIAM
21 GEORGE G. KIRKPATRICK, JR.
22 George G. Kirkpatrick, Jr., was born on December 24,
23 1938, in Gainesville, Florida, and served as the Senator from
24 the Fifth District in the Florida Senate from 1980 until 2000.
25 During his tenure in the Florida Senate, Senator George G.
26 Kirkpatrick, Jr., authored the Solid Waste Management Act of
27 1988, which established recycling programs statewide;
28 sponsored the Sadowski Affordable Housing Act in order to make
29 housing more accessible to low-income Floridians; sponsored
30 the Preservation 2000 program to preserve sensitive state
31 lands; was tireless in his efforts to preserve the Rodman

1 Reservoir; and championed workforce development and economic
2 development programs that have greatly benefited the workers
3 of this state. Through his work in the Florida Legislature and
4 as the Executive Director of the Independent Colleges and
5 Universities of Florida, Senator Kirkpatrick also worked
6 successfully to improve higher education throughout this
7 state. His contributions to the State of Florida and the
8 people of this state were numerous, and his legacy as a
9 champion of children, a protector of the environment, and an
10 advocate for higher education shall live on for years to come.
11 Senator George G. Kirkpatrick, Jr., died unexpectedly on
12 February 5, 2003, in Tallahassee, and is survived by his wife,
13 Monika, his children Catherine and Grier, and three
14 grandchildren.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
16 signed by the President of the Senate, with the Seal of the
17 Senate affixed, be transmitted to Mrs. Monika Kirkpatrick,
18 widow of George G. Kirkpatrick, Jr., as a tangible token of
19 the sentiments expressed herein and as a lasting symbol of the
20 respect of the members of the Florida Senate.
