  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing January 27, 2003, as

  3         "Homestead's 90th Anniversary Celebration Day."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, on December 17, 1912, 26 people living in an

  6  unincorporated community known as Homestead in South Dade

  7  County, Florida, met to discuss the feasibility of

  8  incorporating the community to provide police protection,

  9  establish a better school, and enforce sanitation laws, and

10         WHEREAS, on January 27, 1913, the electors who resided

11  in the Homestead community conducted an election to decide

12  whether to adopt a charter incorporating the community,

13  pursuant to which 21 electors voted "yes" and 5 voted "no,"

14  thereby deciding to adopt the charter and incorporate the

15  community into a municipal corporation named Homestead,

16  Florida, and

17         WHEREAS, the 26 people who attended the December 17,

18  1912, meeting were: E. L. Brooks, G. M. Budd, F. A. Campbell,

19  J. W. Campbell, W. B. Caves, J. E. Cochran, A. W. Chapman, A.

20  T. Duval, T. E. Evans, J. U. Free, J. A. Kahl, P. D. Lamb, S.

21  E. Livingston, A. J. Miller, W. H. Mathewson, L. S. Mowery, J.

22  D. Redd, D. W. Sullivan, J. W. Simpson, Charles Sherritt, F.

23  J. Springer, W. T. Tweedell, R. F. Tatum, Mr. Martin, and, the

24  first elected officials of Homestead, Florida, were: R. F.

25  Tatum, as Mayor, and W. J. Tweedell, G. M. Budd, J. D. Redd,

26  J. E. Cochran, and J. U. Free, as Aldermen, and

27         WHEREAS, January 27, 2003, was the 90th anniversary of

28  the date on which the city of Homestead, Florida, was

29  established, and was the day on which the city began a

30  yearlong celebration of its 90th anniversary, NOW, THEREFORE,

 1  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 2  

 3         That the Florida Senate recognizes and commends those

 4  who settled and pioneered the development of Homestead,

 5  Florida, and those who since have lived and worked there to

 6  make it the vibrant community it is today, and recognizes

 7  January 27, 2003, as "Homestead's 90th Anniversary Celebration

 8  Day."

 9         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

10  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Roscoe

11  Warren, Mayor of Homestead, Florida, as a tangible token of

12  the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
