  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing October 2003 as Breast

  3         Cancer Awareness Month in Florida.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer

  6  diagnosed in women in the nation, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida ranks fourth in the nation for total

  8  number of new breast cancer cases and deaths from breast

  9  cancer, and

10         WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer and

11  the single most important risk factor is age, such that 64

12  percent of all breast cancers occur in women age 60 and older,

13  and

14         WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer

15  Society estimates that a total of 13,100 new cases of invasive

16  breast cancer in Florida were diagnosed during the year 2002,

17  and

18         WHEREAS, every 3 hours, one women in Florida dies of

19  breast cancer, and a total of 2,600 Floridian women die from

20  breast cancer within 1 year, and

21         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cause

22  of cancer death in white women and the number one cause of

23  cancer death among African American women, and

24         WHEREAS, almost 1 million women over the age of 40 in

25  Florida have never had a mammogram, and

26         WHEREAS, early detection, through routine clinical

27  exams and mammography screening, beginning at age 40 in

28  compliance with the American Cancer Society recommended breast

29  cancer screening guidelines, is the key to improving survival

30  rates for breast cancer, and

 1         WHEREAS, breast cancer awareness programs, such as the

 2  American Cancer Society's Tell-A-Friend-Tuesday program will

 3  promote early detection through regular screening in

 4  conjunction with the promotion of October as Breast Cancer

 5  Awareness Month, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That the Florida Senate recognizes the month of October

10  2003 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and urges all

11  women to understand the risks associated with breast cancer,

12  to take preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to

13  undergo early detection procedures such as mammography and

14  compliance with the American Cancer Society recommended

15  breast-cancer screening guidelines.
