2 A resolution recognizing and commending the
3 creation of the Florida Dialogue on Cancer.

5 WHEREAS, in Florida during calendar year 2002, there
6 were 92,200 new cases of cancer and 39,900 cancer-related
7 deaths, and
8 WHEREAS, Florida ranks second among all states in
9 cancer mortality yet ranks only 19th in the receipt of grants
10 and awards from the National Cancer Institute, and
11 WHEREAS, the expansion of biomedical research in
12 Florida can yield significant benefits to the state's economy
13 since biotechnical and pharmaceutical firms are likely to
14 generate two and one-half times the amount spent to conduct
15 such research in Florida in additional spending, and
16 WHEREAS, many populations in Florida experience
17 financial and cultural barriers to accessing cancer care and
18 treatment, and
19 WHEREAS, the opportunity exists to gather the state's
20 leaders from health care, cancer control, government,
21 business, and community-based organizations to address and
22 attempt to resolve Florida's cancer disparities through a
23 public and private nonprofit collaborative partnership, and
24 WHEREAS, such a collaborative partnership would have a
25 unique opportunity to significantly expand and enhance cancer
26 research and the health care systems that provide access to
27 cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and care, and
28 WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
29 Society is positioned to establish, sponsor, and lead such a
30 collaborative partnership, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

3 That the Florida Senate recognizes the creation of the
4 Florida Dialogue on Cancer, sponsored by the Florida Division
5 of the American Cancer Society, and commends this bold new
6 statewide initiative to lead Florida to win the fight against
7 cancer.
