2 A resolution recognizing April 2003 as "Cancer
3 Control Awareness Month" in the State of
4 Florida.

6 WHEREAS, cancer afflicts approximately three out of
7 four families, two out of every five Floridians are expected
8 to eventually be victimized by cancer, and cancer now accounts
9 for one out of every four deaths in Florida, and
10 WHEREAS, it is estimated that in Florida during 2003,
11 there will be 96,100 new cases of cancer and 40,100 Floridians
12 will die from cancer, and
13 WHEREAS, it is estimated that in 2003 one-third of all
14 cancer deaths in Florida will result from nutritional
15 deficiencies, physical inactivity, obesity, and other
16 avoidable lifestyle factors, and
17 WHEREAS, 13 percent of all cancers diagnosed last year
18 were lung cancers resulting from tobacco use and 28 percent of
19 the cancer deaths last year were caused by lung cancer
20 resulting from tobacco use, and
21 WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for cancer is as high
22 as 95 percent if the disease is diagnosed at an early stage
23 and is still localized, an opportunity most likely available
24 to people who regularly obtain a cancer screening in accord
25 with the American Cancer Society's cancer screening
26 guidelines, and
27 WHEREAS, Cancer Control Awareness Month and statewide
28 cancer-control initiatives, such as the Florida Dialogue on
29 Cancer sponsored by the Florida Division of the American
30 Cancer Society, may result in reducing the rate and severity

2 NOW, THEREFORE,

4 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
5
6 That the Florida Senate recognizes April 2003 as
7 "Cancer Control Awareness Month" in the State of Florida and
8 encourages all Floridians to learn more about cancer risks and
9 the behaviors that increase those risks and to regularly
10 obtain cancer screenings in accordance with American Cancer
11 Society guidelines.
