  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing and honoring former

  3         Florida Senator Travis A. Gresham, Jr.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Travis A. Gresham, Jr., was raised in Lee

  6  County, and educated in the Lee County Public School System,

  7  graduating in 1943 from Ft. Myers High School, and

  8         WHEREAS, Travis A. Gresham, Jr, thereupon enlisted in

  9  the United States Army and served his country in combat in the

10  European Theatre during World War II, was captured, and became

11  a prisoner of war until being freed when Allied Forces

12  conquered Germany, and

13         WHEREAS, following the war, Travis A. Gresham, Jr.,

14  returned home and thereafter attended the University of

15  Virginia, Harvard University, and the University of Florida,

16  obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Harvard University

17  in 1949, and his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of

18  Florida in 1952, and successfully practiced law in Ft. Myers

19  and the Southwest Florida area for almost 40 years, and

20         WHEREAS, in 1958, Travis A. Gresham, Jr., was elected

21  to the Florida Senate, representing Lee, Collier, Hendry, and

22  Monroe counties, and distinguished himself as a leader in

23  sponsoring legislation in 1961 to establish Edison Junior

24  College, now known as Edison Community College, and

25         WHEREAS, serving as Chair of the College's Board of

26  Trustees for the next 13 years, Senator Gresham contributed

27  more than $100,000 in land and capital to support the

28  College's growth and development, and

29         WHEREAS, at the age of 77, Senator Gresham suffered a

30  heart attack and died leaving behind four sons and eight

31  grandchildren, many devoted friends, and a legacy of dedicated

 1  leadership and service to his community and the state, NOW,

 2  THEREFORE,

 3  

 4  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 5  

 6         That the Florida Senate recognizes and honors one of

 7  its own, former Senator Travis A. Gresham, Jr., for his

 8  outstanding public service to the people of Lee, Collier,

 9  Hendry, and Monroe counties, and to the State of Florida, and

10  for his special leadership in supporting the creation,

11  establishment, growth, and development of Edison Community

12  College.
