  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing and commending Florida

  3         A & M University's 2003 Honda Campus All-Star

  4         Challenge Academic Team.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, in 1989, American Honda Motor Company,

  7  partnering with the Association of College Unions

  8  International and the National Association for Equal

  9  Opportunity in Higher Education, collaborated with the College

10  Bowl Company to establish a unique competition known as the

11  "Honda Campus All-Star Challenge" for America's 89 4-year

12  degree-granting Historically Black Colleges and Universities,

13  and

14         WHEREAS, since the inaugural year of the challenge,

15  more than 15,000 students have participated and gone on to

16  pursue successful careers in science, medicine, aeronautics,

17  industry, and government, and

18         WHEREAS, Academic Teams from Florida A & M University,

19  coached by Dr. Vivian L. Hobbs, have participated in each

20  challenge conducted in the 14-year history of the competition,

21  distinguishing themselves as outstanding scholars by

22  continually earning a place in the final rounds, capturing the

23  National Championship in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2003, and

24  winning more than $330,000 in academic grants, and

25         WHEREAS, Florida A & M University's 2003 National

26  Championship Academic Team is made up of Jeffrey Rodgers,

27  Alonzo Brandon Alexander, Jonathan Evans, Michael Gebrebrhan,

28  and Kevin Johnson, NOW, THEREFORE,

30  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 1         That the Florida Senate recognizes, commends, and

 2  applauds the students who participated as members of the

 3  academic teams assembled by Florida A & M University, and

 4  coached by Dr. Vivian L. Hobbs, for their academic excellence,

 5  their distinguished record of competition in the Honda Campus

 6  All-Star Challenges conducted over the past 14 years, and

 7  their capturing Five National Championships, culminating with

 8  the 2003 National Championship.

 9         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

10  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Jeffrey

11  Rodgers, Alonzo Brandon Alexander, Jonathan Evans, Michael

12  Gebrebrhan, and Kevin Johnson, and to their coach, Dr. Vivian

13  L. Hobbs, as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida

14  Senate.
