  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to driver's license

  3         requirements; amending s. 322.54, F.S.;

  4         providing an exception to driver's license

  5         requirements or operators of certain trucks and

  6         tractor trailers; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9  

10         Section 1.  Paragraph (d) of subsection (2) of section

11  322.54, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:

12         322.54  Classification.--

13         (2)  The department shall issue, pursuant to the

14  requirements of this chapter, drivers' licenses in accordance

15  with the following classifications:

16         (d)  Any person, except a person who possesses a valid

17  Class A, valid Class B, or valid Class C driver's license, who

18  drives a truck or a truck tractor having a gross vehicle

19  weight rating, a declared weight, or an actual weight,

20  whichever is greatest, of 8,000 pounds or more but less than

21  26,001 pounds, or which has a width of more than 80 inches

22  must possess a valid Class D driver's license, except that a

23  person may operate a vehicle registered for private use under

24  s. 320.08(2) with a valid Class E license.  Any person who

25  possesses a valid Class D driver's license may, subject to the

26  appropriate restrictions and endorsements, drive any type of

27  motor vehicle, other than the type of motor vehicle for which

28  a Class A, Class B, or Class C driver's license is required,

29  within this state.

30         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2003.
