A bill to be entitled |

An act relating to the Medal of Heroism; providing that |

|
designated persons are eligible to receive the Medal of |
4
|
Heroism; providing an effective date. |

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |

|
|

|
Section 1.(1) The Governor may award a Medal of Heroism |
9
|
of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to law |
10
|
enforcement or corrections officers, as defined in s. |
11
|
943.10(14), Florida Statutes, firefighters, as defined in s. |
12
|
112.191(1)(b), Florida Statutes, emergency medical technicians, |
13
|
as defined in s. 401.23(11), Florida Statutes, or paramedics, as |
14
|
defined in s. 401.23(17), Florida Statutes, who have |
15
|
distinguished themselves conspicuously by gallantry and |
16
|
intrepidity and who risk their lives deliberately, above and |
17
|
beyond the call of duty, while: |
18
|
(a) Performing duty in their respective positions. |
19
|
(b) Engaging in hazardous or perilous activities to |
20
|
preserve lives, with the knowledge that such activities might |
21
|
result in great personal harm. |

|
(2) The candidates or persons seeking to nominate |
23
|
candidates for the award must make written application to the |
24
|
Governor. The Governor may refer applications to the Florida |
25
|
Department of Law Enforcement, the Department of Community |
26
|
Affairs, or to a private association for advice and |
27
|
recommendations regarding the applications. |
28
|
Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2003. |
