| 2 | A resolution designating April 2, 2003, as "F.S.U. Day" in | ||

| 5 | WHEREAS, with its Tallahassee campus the oldest continuous | ||
| 6 | site of higher education in Florida and home to the state's | ||
| 7 | first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the Florida State University is | ||
| 8 | the first liberal arts college in the state, an institution that | ||
| 9 | grew into the Florida State College for Women, the nation's | ||
| 10 | second largest state college for women, recognized by the | ||
| 11 | Association of American Universities in 1924, and | ||
| 12 | WHEREAS, with coursework first taught in the late 1800's, | ||
| 13 | Florida State University emphasizes teaching, research, and | ||
| 14 | public service through its 17 independent colleges and schools, | ||
| 15 | the newest being the College of Medicine, and offers graduate | ||
| 16 | and undergraduate degrees in 549 fields, many of which are | ||
| 17 | nationally recognized programs, and | ||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Florida State University is a national leader in | ||
| 19 | international education, with more than 40 years' experience | ||
| 20 | abroad and 37 programs, including four year-round study centers | ||
| 21 | in England, Italy, Spain, and Panama, as well as a broad range | ||
| 22 | of summer programs in places such as Costa Rica, Croatia, the | ||
| 23 | Czech Republic, South Africa, France, and Ireland, and | ||
| 24 | WHEREAS, Florida State University became part of an elite | ||
| 25 | group of the nation's top research universities in 1994 when the | ||
| 26 | Carnegie Foundation designated it a "Research I" institution | ||
| 27 | and, with a continuously growing research foundation, | ||
| 28 | consistently ranks among the top four universities nationally in | ||
| 29 | revenues generated from scientific research and discoveries, and | ||
| 30 | WHEREAS, a long, continuing tradition of promoting racial, | ||
| 31 | ethnic, and cultural diversity on its campus, coupled with | ||
| 32 | aggressive recruitment of diverse groups of students, has indeed | ||
| 33 | resulted in an enriching college experience for Florida State | ||
| 34 | University students, NOW, THEREFORE, | ||

| 36 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of | ||
| 37 | Florida: | ||

| 39 | That the House of Representatives proudly designates April | ||
| 40 | 2, 2003, as "F.S.U. Day" in Tallahassee in recognition of | ||
| 41 | Florida State University's outstanding contributions as one of | ||
| 42 | the nation's leading institutions of higher education. | ||
| 43 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be | ||
| 44 | presented to Dr. T. K. Wetherell as a tangible token of the | ||
| 45 | sentiments expressed herein. | ||
