WHEREAS, Bethune-Cookman College was founded on October 3, |

1904, with "five girls, $1.50, and faith in God" by Mary McLeod |

Bethune, and |

WHEREAS, through the power of God and the tenacity of Mary |

McLeod Bethune, the college grew from an elementary school, then |

|
to a high school, and finally to a college for African |
10
|
Americans, and |

|
WHEREAS, with a current college enrollment in excess of |
12
|
2,600 students, Bethune-Cookman College ranks as the sixth |
13
|
largest in student population out of the 39 United Negro College |

|
Fund institutions, and |

|
WHEREAS, the alumni of Bethune-Cookman College exceed |

|
10,000 members, and |

|
WHEREAS, home of the Fighting Wildcats, on November 23, |

|
2002, Bethune-Cookman College witnessed its spirited football |

|
team score an impressive 37-10 win over Florida Agricultural and |
20
|
Mechanical University, marking the 50th anniversary of the |
21
|
school's first-ever victory over the FAMU Rattlers in 1952, and |
22
|
earning the 2002 MEAC championship title, NOW, THEREFORE, |

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |

That the House of Representatives recognizes the tenacious |

|
spirit that has pervaded Bethune-Cookman College since its |

|
inception more than 98 years ago, congratulates this fine |

|
institution, including the Fighting Wildcats of its 2002 |

championship football team, and acknowledges that anything is |
32
|
possible with "five girls, $1.50, and faith in God." |
