1 House Resolution
2          A resolution recognizing the creation of the Florida
3    Dialogue on Cancer.
4         
5          WHEREAS, with many of the state's populations experiencing
6    financial and cultural barriers to accessing cancer care,
7    Florida ranks second in the nation in cancer mortality, having
8    sustained 92,200 new cases of cancer and 39,900 cancer-related
9    deaths in 2002, and
10          WHEREAS, Florida is 19th among the states in receiving
11    grants and awards from the National Cancer Institute, totaling
12    approximately $31.6 million, yet other states that rank close to
13    Florida in cancer burden receive significantly more grant and
14    award funding from the institute, and
15          WHEREAS, the expansion of biomedical research has the
16    potential to yield large growth in Florida’s economy, and every
17    dollar spent on biomedical research may generate two-and-one-
18    half times the spending back into the state by biotechnology and
19    pharmaceutical firms, and
20          WHEREAS, there exists an opportunity to gather the state’s
21    leaders from health care, cancer control, government, business
22    and community-based organizations to collectively address
23    Florida’s cancer disparities through a public-private nonprofit
24    collaborative partnership and to create a foundation that could
25    significantly change the face and scope of cancer research and
26    provide access to cancer screening and diagnostic and treatment
27    services to all of Florida's residents, and
28          WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society, Florida Division, is
29    positioned to create, lead, and sponsor such a collaboration of
30    leaders, NOW, THEREFORE,

32          Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
33    Florida:

35          That the House of Representatives recognizes the creation
36    of the Florida Dialogue on Cancer sponsored by the Florida
37    Division of the American Cancer Society and supports this bold
38    new statewide initiative to systematically win Florida's fight
39    against cancer.
