| 2 | A resolution designating May 2003 as "Florida Osteoporosis | ||

| 5 | WHEREAS, osteoporosis, a debilitating disease that causes | ||
| 6 | bones to become fragile and more susceptible to fracture, is a | ||
| 7 | serious public health threat for both women and men as they | ||
| 8 | begin to age, and | ||
| 9 | WHEREAS, recent data suggest that over two million | ||
| 10 | Floridians have osteoporosis or low bone mass that leads to more | ||
| 11 | than 22,000 hip fractures each year, and | ||
| 12 | WHEREAS, the number of Americans suffering from | ||
| 13 | osteoporosis is expected to reach 52 million by the year 2010, | ||
| 14 | and | ||
| 15 | WHEREAS, a heightened awareness of the risks and causes of | ||
| 16 | osteoporosis can be a major factor in its prevention when | ||
| 17 | accompanied by a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, weight- | ||
| 18 | bearing exercise, a healthy lifestyle with no smoking or | ||
| 19 | excessive alcohol use, and bone-density testing and medications | ||
| 20 | when appropriate, NOW, THEREFORE, | ||

| 22 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of | ||
| 23 | Florida: | ||
| 24 | |||
| 25 | That the House of Representatives designates the month of | ||
| 26 | May 2003 as "Florida Osteoporosis Prevention Month" and urges | ||
| 27 | all of the state's residents to acquaint themselves with the | ||
| 28 | risks, causes, and prevention of this enfeebling disease. | ||
