A resolution designating May 2003 as "Florida Osteoporosis |

Prevention Month." |

WHEREAS, osteoporosis, a debilitating disease that causes |
6
|
bones to become fragile and more susceptible to fracture, is a |
7
|
serious public health threat for both women and men as they |
8
|
begin to age, and |
9
|
WHEREAS, recent data suggest that over two million |
10
|
Floridians have osteoporosis or low bone mass that leads to more |
11
|
than 22,000 hip fractures each year, and |
12
|
WHEREAS, the number of Americans suffering from |
13
|
osteoporosis is expected to reach 52 million by the year 2010, |
14
|
and |
15
|
WHEREAS, a heightened awareness of the risks and causes of |
16
|
osteoporosis can be a major factor in its prevention when |
17
|
accompanied by a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, weight- |
18
|
bearing exercise, a healthy lifestyle with no smoking or |
19
|
excessive alcohol use, and bone-density testing and medications |
20
|
when appropriate, NOW, THEREFORE, |

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
23
|
Florida: |

That the House of Representatives designates the month of |
26
|
May 2003 as "Florida Osteoporosis Prevention Month" and urges |
27
|
all of the state's residents to acquaint themselves with the |
28
|
risks, causes, and prevention of this enfeebling disease. |
