HR 9001C 2003

House Resolution
A resolution honoring the memory of Dr. Israel Tribble,
   Jr.

WHEREAS, apprehended as a coconspirator in an attempted
practical joke, young Philadelphia 10th grader "Ike" Tribble,
son of a single mother with a third-grade education, was singled
out by his teacher, who, sensing the boy's extraordinary
potential, pulled him from his trade-school curriculum and
immersed him in college preparatory courses, predicting that
"some day you're going to make a mark for your race," and
WHEREAS, five decades later, after earning a bachelor's
degree from Montclair State University in New Jersey, rising to
the rank of captain in the United States Army, receiving
master's and doctoral degrees from California State and Stanford
Universities, respectively, and devoting himself to a career in
higher education, Dr. Israel Tribble authored his first book,
"Making their Mark: Educating African-American Children," and
WHEREAS, Dr. Tribble served in schools and colleges from
the West Coast to the East Coast as instructor, administrator,
and officer and held high positions in the United States
Departments of Defense and Education; he was one of the few
blacks in the inner circle of Tampa business leaders and, the
first black chair of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce,
crafted a board that better represents the diverse business
community; he held about 30 appointed positions on various
boards and committees and, as director of the Florida Education
Fund for 17 years, helped a generation of African Americans earn
doctoral and law degrees through financial aid, emotional
   support, and inspiration, and
WHEREAS, on June 21, 2003, the remarkable life of an
outstanding family man, business leader, and champion of
African-American history and scholarship ended after 62 years,
remembered and mourned by family, friends, colleagues,
politicians, and, perhaps his greatest legacy, scores of
advanced degree holders, among whom was his elder daughter, who,
on May 10, fulfilled her father's wish that she earn a doctorate
so she "could be Dr. Tribble just like him," NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
   Florida:

That the Members of the House of Representatives join to
express their respect and honor for the late Dr. Israel Tribble,
Jr., a brilliant, courageous, dynamic leader, and to offer their
sincere condolences to his bereaved family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
presented to wife Sheila Simmons, to daughter Ahsha, and to
daughter Aiyisha as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed
   herein.
