  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to requirements for high school

  3         graduation; amending s. 1003.43, F.S.; amending

  4         certain prerequisites to allow the award of a

  5         standard high school diploma to honorably

  6         discharged veterans of the Korean War who did

  7         not complete the necessary graduation

  8         requirements; providing an effective date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11  

12         Section 1.  Subsection (13) of section 1003.43, Florida

13  Statutes, is amended to read:

14         1003.43  General requirements for high school

15  graduation.--

16         (13)  The Commissioner of Education may award a

17  standard high school diploma to honorably discharged veterans

18  who started high school between 1946 and 1950 and were

19  scheduled to graduate between 1950 and 1955 1954, but were

20  inducted into the United States Armed Forces between June 1950

21  and January 1955 1954, and served during the Korean War prior

22  to completing the necessary high school graduation

23  requirements. Upon the recommendation of the commissioner, the

24  State Board of Education may develop criteria and guidelines

25  for awarding such diplomas.

26         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.

 2                          SENATE SUMMARY

 3    Amends certain prerequisites to allow the award of a
      standard high school diploma to honorably discharged
 4    veterans of the Korean War who did not complete the
      necessary graduation requirements, by expanding the time
 5    period during which such a veteran was scheduled to
      graduate and the time period during which he or she was
 6    inducted into the armed forces.
