1 Senate Resolution No. ____
2 A resolution honoring Ms. Hazel Haley.

4 WHEREAS, Ms. Hazel Haley, Florida's longest-serving
5 active teacher, has spent nearly 63 of her 65 remarkable years
6 as an educator teaching English at Lakeland High School, and
7 WHEREAS, Ms. Haley, 86, earned a Bachelor of Arts
8 degree in English from Florida Southern College and, after
9 teaching briefly at Oviedo and Moore Haven High Schools,
10 returned to her alma mater in Lakeland from which she had
11 graduated in 1933, and
12 WHEREAS, indicative of the esteem in which she is held
13 as one of the state's truly outstanding teachers, Ms. Haley is
14 an inductee into the Polk County Schools' Hall of Fame and a
15 recipient of the Hollis Award for Community Service; there are
16 scholarships in her honor at both Florida Southern College and
17 Polk Community College; and a building on the Lakeland Senior
18 High School campus proudly bears her name, and
19 WHEREAS, in addition to her being dearly cherished by
20 the citizens of Polk County as their very own unique treasure,
21 Ms. Haley has gained renown far beyond the borders of her
22 local community and of her state, as evidenced by a recent
23 two-day classroom visit and interview by a reporter from the
24 Times of London in preparation for a feature story to appear
25 in the paper's weekly educational supplement on May 23, NOW,
26 THEREFORE,

28 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

30 That the Senate is truly honored to recognize and
31 extend its sincere gratitude to Ms. Hazel Haley, whose

1 influence as a truly committed teacher has touched thousands
2 of lives in ways and numbers that cannot be reckoned.
3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
4 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Ms. Hazel
5 Haley as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida
6 Senate.
