1 Senate Resolution No. ____
2 A resolution congratulating the City of Miami
3 Beach, All-America City.

5 WHEREAS, on June 14, 2003, at an impressive ceremony
6 held in Washington, D.C., Miami Beach was chosen from among a
7 list of 30 finalists nationwide to receive one of the 10
8 coveted All-America City Awards for 2003, and
9 WHEREAS, the All-America City Award, a 54-year-old
10 program of the National Civic League, annually honors 10
11 communities deemed to best exemplify the spirit of grassroots
12 citizen involvement and cross-sector collaborative problem
13 solving, and
14 WHEREAS, introduced by the chair of the All-America
15 City Jury as a community that "embraced diversity and embraced
16 cultural cooperation," Miami Beach was judged on its projects
17 "Neighborhood Services," which works to improve neighborhood
18 assets, help residents access city resources, and identify
19 community needs; "Planned Progress," a coalition of concerned
20 residents, community organizations, and city government that
21 promoted the issuance of bonds with which to fund capital
22 improvements currently being implemented in each of the city's
23 13 neighborhoods; and the "Truancy Intervention Program," or
24 "TIP," a collaborative effort by the city, county, public
25 schools, state attorney's office, and community-based agencies
26 to identify and provide early intervention services to youth
27 at risk of school failure and truancy, and
28 WHEREAS, in applauding the City of Miami Beach for
29 having joined the ranks of nearly 500 American communities
30 that have been recognized since 1949 as having exhibited
31 extraordinary ingenuity, collaboration, and positive results,

1 it is fitting to endorse the sentiments of the president of
2 the National Civic League that these cities, symbolizing the
3 best of the nation, serve as an inspiration to communities
4 across the United States that are facing similar challenges,
5 NOW, THEREFORE,

7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That the City of Miami Beach is proudly acknowledged as
10 a recipient of the prestigious All-America City Award and is
11 extended sincere gratitude and hearty congratulations for the
12 efforts and accomplishments that have led to this well-merited
13 recognition.
14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
15 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to David
16 Dermer, Mayor of the City of Miami Beach, as a tangible token
17 of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
