2 A resolution commending Derrick Wilson.

4 WHEREAS, on Saturday night, February 7, 2004, in
5 Olathe, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, Derrick Wilson, a
6 95-pound 15-year-old boxer from Ft. Myers, Florida, won a
7 unanimous decision over Richard Morales, a boxer from
8 California, to win the 2004 Silver Gloves National
9 Championship in his weight class, and
10 WHEREAS, a product of the Ft. Myers Police Athletic
11 League, Derrick is no stranger to competing at the national
12 level, as his 2004 National Championship title culminates 3
13 years of competing in the Silver Gloves National Championship
14 tournament, having finished in third place in his weight class
15 in each of the past 2 years, and
16 WHEREAS, enroute to winning the National Championship
17 title, Derrick fought a semifinal match on February 6, 2004,
18 in which he defeated the two-time National Champion from
19 Texas, and
20 WHEREAS, Derrick Wilson's amateur boxing career also
21 includes 25 state tournament crowns earned over the past 3
22 years, and
23 WHEREAS, Derrick's boxing accomplishments exemplify the
24 level of competitive excellence young people can achieve if
25 they are committed to training diligently, becoming physically
26 fit, developing their skills, and acquiring the mental
27 toughness required to persist in the face of what appear to be
28 overwhelming odds, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 That the Senate commends Derrick Wilson for his
2 extraordinary accomplishments in amateur boxing bringing honor
3 to the residents of Ft. Myers, Lee County, and the State of
4 Florida.
5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution,
6 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Derrick
7 Wilson and his coach, Larry Willis, as a tangible token of the
8 sentiments of the Florida Senate.
