2 A resolution recognizing and commending Curtis
3 Miranda.

5 WHEREAS, Curtis Miranda, a native of Jacksonville,
6 Florida, and a 1957 graduate of Matthew Gilbert Senior High
7 School, enjoyed a football career few have known, attending
8 Florida A & M University and playing for the legendary Jake
9 Gaither from 1957 to 1961, during which the University won
10 three national championship titles, and also playing
11 professional football for the New York Giants and the Hamilton
12 Tiger Cats, and
13 WHEREAS, a dominant offensive lineman at 6 feet 2
14 inches in height, weighing 221 pounds, and wearing jersey
15 number 53, Curtis was alternated at tackle and tight end in
16 the 1957 and 1958 football seasons before settling in as the
17 starting center for the 1959 football season, following which
18 he earned All-America recognition from the Associated Press,
19 the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the
20 Pittsburgh Courier, and
21 WHEREAS, in 1979, Curtis was among those in the fourth
22 class of former Florida A & M University athletes inducted
23 into the University's Sports Hall of Fame, and on October 25,
24 2003, at halftime of the football game with Norfolk State at
25 Bragg Memorial Stadium, the University honored Curtis Miranda
26 by retiring his football jersey number 53, marking the first
27 occasion for the University to retire the jersey worn by one
28 of its former student athletes, and
29 WHEREAS, in the halftime ceremony, former Acting
30 Athletic Director, J.R.E. Lee, III, recognized Curtis for his
31 invaluable contributions to Florida A & M University, as an

1 excellent student, a tremendous football player, a successful
2 businessman, an outstanding citizen, and a faithful alumnus
3 who has led the Jacksonville Chapter of Florida A & M
4 University's Booster organization to raise more than $300,000
5 for the University, NOW, THEREFORE,

7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That the Florida Senate recognizes and commends Curtis
10 Miranda for his outstanding achievements as a student athlete
11 while attending Florida A & M University, for his outstanding
12 accomplishments in life since graduating from the University,
13 and for his invaluable support of the University as a faithful
14 alumnus.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
16 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Curtis
17 Miranda as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida
18 Senate.
