  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to road designations;

  3         designating Captain Charles "Bo" Harrison

  4         Memorial Highway in Pasco County; directing the

  5         Department of Transportation to erect suitable

  6         markers; providing an effective date.

  7  

  8         WHEREAS, Captain Charles "Bo" Harrison served as a law

  9  enforcement officer in Pasco County for over 30 years and was

10  the first ever and highest ranking African-American officer to

11  serve in the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, and

12         WHEREAS, Captain Harrison was a member of the F.O.P.,

13  the Association of Deputy Sheriffs, Inc., and the P.S.O.

14  Legion for the Recruitment of Minorities, and

15         WHEREAS, Captain Harrison often assisted children by

16  helping to pay for books and other education-related expenses,

17  including one student's tuition for the Law Enforcement

18  Academy, and

19         WHEREAS, Captain Harrison was a very active member of

20  his church and sang in the church choir, and

21         WHEREAS, shot in the back while seated in his patrol

22  car on June 1, 2003, Captain Harrison became the first Pasco

23  County officer in over 80 years to be killed in the line of

24  duty, and

25         WHEREAS, Captain Harrison is survived by three loving

26  and devoted children as well as a community grateful for his

27  dedicated years of service and ultimate sacrifice, NOW,

28  THEREFORE,

30  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

 1         Section 1.  Captain Charles "Bo" Harrison Memorial

 2  Highway designated; department to erect suitable markers.--

 3         (1)  That portion of U.S. Highway 301 in Pasco County,

 4  northbound and southbound, is designated as "Captain Charles

 5  'Bo' Harrison Memorial Highway."

 6         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

 7  erect suitable markers designating Captain Charles "Bo"

 8  Harrison Memorial Highway as described in subsection (1).

 9         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

10  law.
