2 A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha
3 Sorority, Inc.

5 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded
6 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
7 WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first
8 sorority established by African-American college women, and
9 WHEREAS, this sorority is an international organization
10 with approximately 250,000 members in over 900 chapters
11 extending across the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda,
12 Great Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands, and
13 WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in
14 communities and on college and university campuses in the
15 State of Florida, and
16 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed
17 to community service and has made numerous contributions to
18 the educational, civic, and social lives of Florida's
19 citizens, and
20 WHEREAS, Linda White of Chicago, Illinois, is the
21 National President of this great sisterhood and leads the
22 250,000 women of this organization in the current
23 international program, "The SPIRIT of AKA," the acronym and
24 concept for Sisterhood, Service, Partnership, Innovation,
25 Respect, Involvement, and Technology, and
26 WHEREAS, Irene McCollom is the South Atlantic Regional
27 Director of this great sisterhood and leads members of the
28 sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, and
29 WHEREAS, Geraline Gilyard-Ingraham, an outstanding
30 Floridian, is the president of the largest chapter in Florida,
31 Gamma Zeta Omega, located in Miami, and

1 WHEREAS, Senator Frederica S. Wilson, a past South
2 Atlantic Regional Director, and Senator Mandy Dawson are
3 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and
4 WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in
5 the State of Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours
6 implementing service programs in their respective communities,
7 NOW, THEREFORE,

9 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
10
11 That the members of the Florida Senate recognize the
12 commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to
13 community service and express special appreciation for their
14 service in the State of Florida.
