1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to the compulsory age of school
3 attendance; amending s. 1003.61, F.S.;
4 providing a conditional expiration date for the
5 pilot attendance project implemented by the
6 Manatee County District School Board, which
7 raises the compulsory age of attendance;
8 providing an effective date.

10 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12 Section 1. Subsection (5) is added to section 1003.61,
13 Florida Statutes, to read:
14 1003.61 Pilot attendance project.--It is the purpose
15 of this section to require the Manatee County District School
16 Board to implement a pilot project that raises the compulsory
17 age of attendance for children from the age of 16 years to the
18 age of 18 years. The pilot project applies to each child who
19 has not attained the age of 16 years by September 30 of the
20 school year in which a school board policy is adopted.
21 (5) The pilot attendance project implemented under
22 this section expires June 30, 2005, unless the Manatee County
23 District School Board requests and the Legislature enacts a
24 later expiration date.
25 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.

28 SENATE SUMMARY
29 Provides that the pilot attendance project in Manatee
County, which raises the compulsory age of school
30 attendance from the age of 16 years to the age of 18
years, terminates June 30, 2005, unless the county school
31 board requests and the Legislature enacts an extension.
