  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing April 21, 2004, as

  3         Polk County Legislative Day in Tallahassee.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Polk County encompasses 17 municipalities in

  6  the heart of Central Florida including Auburndale, Bartow,

  7  Davenport, Dundee, Eagle Lake, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Haines

  8  City, Highland Park, Hillcrest Heights, Lake Alfred, Lake

  9  Hamilton, Lake Wales, Lakeland, Mulberry, Polk City, and

10  Winter Haven, and

11         WHEREAS, Polk County covers 2,010 square miles of land,

12  dotted with more than 554 freshwater lakes and lush nature

13  preserves featuring rare and exotic wildlife, rolling hills,

14  sparkling rivers, beautiful savannas, and pinewood forests,

15  and

16         WHEREAS, Polk County is known for its historic charm

17  and small-town atmosphere, blended with its largely

18  undiscovered and unspoiled natural surroundings, and

19         WHEREAS, the vacation destinations of Polk County are

20  visited by more than 1.5 million tourists annually and include

21  Historic Bok Sanctuary, Hollis Gardens, Fantasy of Flight, the

22  Water Ski Hall of Fame, and the Frank Lloyd Wright

23  architecture at Florida Southern College, and

24         WHEREAS, Polk County has long been blessed by the State

25  of Florida's great interest in our community and economic

26  development, witnessed again recently by the state's

27  partnership with Polk County to save and restore the treasured

28  landmark Cypress Gardens so that all of our citizens and

29  tourists from throughout the world may enjoy its abundant

30  natural beauty, and

 1         WHEREAS, Polk County, has been called the Largemouth

 2  Bass Fishing Capital of the World for its wonderful fishing in

 3  numerous undeveloped lakes as well as in Winter Haven's chain

 4  of 14 lakes connected by well-established canals, and

 5         WHEREAS, Polk County is home to the Detroit Tigers and

 6  the Cleveland Indians during spring training season, and

 7         WHEREAS, Polk County is the center of citrus production

 8  and phosphate mining for the world, and

 9         WHEREAS, Polk County is the corporate headquarters for

10  Publix Super Markets, the largest private company in the

11  state, employing more than 125,000 persons, and is also home

12  to the W.S. Badcock Corporation, which has been located in

13  Mulberry since 1904, thus celebrating its 100th Anniversary

14  this year, NOW, THEREFORE,

16  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

17  

18         That the Florida Senate recognizes April 21, 2004, as

19  Polk County Legislative Day in Tallahassee.
