3 program for public schools; amending s.
4 1008.22, F.S.; deleting dates that limit the
5 applicability of the use of alternative
6 assessments in lieu of the grade 10 FCAT;
7 deleting dates by which the Legislature must
8 review the use of such alternative assessments;
9 providing an effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. Subsection (9) of section 1008.22, Florida
14 Statutes, is amended to read:
15 1008.22 Student assessment program for public
16 schools.--
17 (9) EQUIVALENCIES FOR STANDARDIZED TESTS.--The
18 Commissioner of Education shall determine the comparable
19 validity of other available standardized tests, including the
20 SAT, ACT, College Placement Test, PSAT, PLAN, and tests used
21 for entry into the military. If such tests are deemed to be
22 valid and reliable measures, the commissioner shall approve
23 the use of such tests as alternative alternate assessments to
24 the grade 10 FCAT for the 2002-2003 school year. Students who
25 attain scores that equate to the passing scores on the grade
26 10 FCAT for purposes of high school graduation on any of the
27 approved alternative assessments shall satisfy the assessment
28 requirement for a standard high school diploma as provided in
29 s. 1003.43(5)(a) for the 2002-2003 school year graduating
30 class. Prior to the application of these alternative

1 assessments in subsequent school years, The Legislature shall
2 review the continued use of these alternative tests.
3 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
4 law.

7 SENATE SUMMARY
8 With respect to the student assessment program for public
schools, deletes dates that limit to the 2002-2003 school
9 year and the 2002-2003 graduating class the applicability
of the use of alternative assessments in lieu of the
10 grade 10 FCAT. Deletes a provision prohibiting the use of
alternative tests after the 2002-2003 school year unless
11 the Legislature has reviewed those assessments.
