  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commending Camillus House for its

  3         contributions to improving the quality of life

  4         for homeless persons.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, Camillus Housing Services addresses the most

  7  obvious aspect of homelessness, providing a wide range of

  8  assistance to people who speak English, Spanish, and Creole,

  9  including emergency, transitional, and permanent housing;

10  comprehensive health care; and social services, and

11         WHEREAS, the Camillus Emergency Shelter provides a

12  total of 102 beds for adult males, 55 of which are reserved

13  for Camillus Life Center clients who reside onsite during

14  their treatment; 10 of which are reserved for clients in the

15  New Work Program; 7 of which are reserved for use as respite

16  beds by Camillus Health Concern patients who are in need of

17  bed rest; and the remaining 30 of which are reserved for use

18  on a first-come, first-serve basis for homeless persons living

19  on the street, and

20         WHEREAS, Camillus House provides transitional housing

21  for formerly homeless men and women who have recently

22  completed a substance abuse treatment program, while the

23  Cottages of Naranja provides 6-9 month transitional housing

24  for single, homeless adults, the Airbase Housing Program

25  provides transitional housing in new units built on the former

26  Homestead Air Reserve Base, the St. Jude Center provides

27  transitional supportive housing, and the Somerville Residence

28  program provides permanent affordable housing to 47 families,

29  and

30         WHEREAS, Camillus House provides many other services to

31  homeless persons, including meals, showers, outpatient

 1  treatment for drug and alcohol additions, work programs, case

 2  management, community and agency referral information, access

 3  to telephone, mail, and a notary public, and social security

 4  assistance, and

 5         WHEREAS, Camillus House has implemented an Outreach and

 6  Placement Services Program operated by three outreach teams

 7  who go into the streets to find homeless persons, annually

 8  contacting and offering assistance to approximately 2,500

 9  homeless persons and providing them with access to services

10  offered through Miami-Dade County's continuum of care system

11  together with information on social services and shelter

12  availability, and

13         WHEREAS, the demonstrated readiness of Camillus House

14  to meet the complex needs of homeless persons identifies their

15  mission as a mission of hope, NOW, THEREFORE,

16  

17  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

18  

19         That the Camillus House is commended for its

20  contributions to improving the quality of life for homeless

21  persons, giving meaning to the words "I am my brother's

22  keeper," and exemplifying compassionate caring in ways that

23  truly make a difference.
