2 A resolution recognizing April 20, 2004, as
3 Florida State University Day.

5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State
6 University is the oldest continuous site of higher education
7 in Florida and holds the state's first chapter of Phi Beta
8 Kappa, and
9 WHEREAS, in 1994, Florida State University was
10 designated as a "Research I" institution by the Carnegie
11 Foundation, thus placing Florida State in an elite group of
12 the nation's top research universities, and
13 WHEREAS, the solid foundation for this "Research I"
14 university was laid through its role as the state's first
15 liberal arts college, which grew into the Florida State
16 College for Women, the nation's second-largest state college
17 for women recognized by the Association of American
18 Universities in 1924, and
19 WHEREAS, today the university's mission emphasizes
20 teaching, research, and public service, with 17 independent
21 colleges and schools, the newest being the College of
22 Medicine, and
23 WHEREAS, with graduate and undergraduate degrees
24 offered in 565 fields, many of which are nationally recognized
25 programs, Florida State University's comprehensive offerings
26 prepare students for graduate school, professional degree
27 programs, and successful careers, and
28 WHEREAS, Florida State University is a leader in the
29 use of new technologies, setting the standard for distance
30 learning and the use of technology in the classroom, as well

1 as campuswide, which allows professors and students to share
2 research with colleagues and students around the world, and
3 WHEREAS, Florida State University consistently ranks
4 among the top four universities in the nation in revenues
5 generated from scientific research and discoveries, an
6 indicator of the university's successful commercialization
7 efforts, and its research foundation continues to grow, and
8 WHEREAS, well-rounded and successful graduates have
9 taken advantage of Florida State University's high-quality
10 academics and research; gained service, social, and leadership
11 skills; and prepared themselves to take meaningful roles in
12 society, and
13 WHEREAS, with a long continuing tradition of promoting
14 racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity on its campus, along
15 with the aggressive recruitment of diverse groups of students,
16 the college experience at Florida State University has become
17 more enriching for students, and
18 WHEREAS, Florida State University is a national leader
19 in international education, with more than forty years of
20 experience and 37 programs abroad, including four year-round
21 study centers in England, Italy, Spain, and Panama, plus a
22 panorama of summer programs in exceptional destinations such
23 as Costa Rica, Croatia, the Czech Republic, South Africa,
24 France, and Ireland, and
25 WHEREAS, Florida State University continues to be a
26 tremendous source of pride for its students, faculty, alumni,
27 friends, and administrators, as well as for all residents of
28 the State of Florida, and
29 WHEREAS, with its strong history as a liberal arts
30 college, commitment to undergraduate education, and extensive
31 and distinguished research in facilities such as the National

1 High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University is
2 truly on the cutting edge of higher education, NOW, THEREFORE,

4 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
5
6 That April 20, 2004, is recognized as Florida State
7 University Day in Tallahassee, in recognition of Florida State
8 University's contributions as an outstanding institution of
9 higher education.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
11 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr. T. K.
12 Wetherell, President of Florida State University, as a
13 tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
