2 A resolution recognizing Ronald "Winky" Wright.

4 WHEREAS, Ronald "Winky" Wright was born November 26,
5 1971, in Washington, D.C., moved to St. Petersburg at the age
6 of sixteen, and began his career as a boxer while still a high
7 school student, when he began working out at the St.
8 Petersburg Boxing Club on 49th Street South, and
9 WHEREAS, Ronald Wright's talent was spotted and
10 encouraged by the club's owners, Dan and Mike Birmingham, who
11 became his first trainers and remain his coaches to this day,
12 and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Wright entered his first amateur fight in
14 1987 and continued amateur boxing until 1990, when he won a
15 bronze medal in the 1990 USA Boxing Championships, a national
16 Police Athletic Title, and a U.S. Olympic Festival Gold Medal,
17 achieving a 53-4 win-loss record in the Junior Middleweight
18 Class, and
19 WHEREAS, in the years since 1990, Mr. Wright made a
20 name for himself as a professional boxer in Europe and,
21 following his victory over Bronco McKart in 1996 for his first
22 pro boxing title, established a name and a following here in
23 the United States as well, achieving a professional win-loss
24 record of 47-3, and
25 WHEREAS, Mr. Wright has kept St. Petersburg as his
26 home, continues to train with Dan and Mike Birmingham with
27 whom he is now coowner of the St. Petersburg Boxing Club, and
28 has a wide following of enthusiastic hometown fans, 200 of
29 whom followed him to Las Vegas on March 13, 2004, where he
30 defeated Shane Mosely to win the International Boxing
31 Federation Junior Middleweight Championship Title, and

1 WHEREAS, Ronald "Winky" Wright has a reputation for
2 being a dedicated athlete, a fine family man, and a loyal
3 friend, and brings recognition to St. Petersburg and the State
4 of Florida for his achievements in the world of sports, NOW,
5 THEREFORE,

7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That Ronald "Winky" Wright is commended for his success
10 in the sport of boxing and for his example of discipline,
11 excellence, and fine sportsmanship.
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
13 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Ronald
14 "Winky" Wright as a token of the good will and esteem of the
15 Florida Senate.
