  2         A resolution recognizing March 2004 as Colon

  3         Cancer Awareness Month.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, colon cancer is one of the most prevalent yet,

  6  in most cases, preventable cancers, and

  7         WHEREAS, among cancer cases in this state, colon cancer

  8  is the second most common cause of cancer death among men and

  9  women, and

10         WHEREAS, it is possible to have colon or rectal cancer

11  yet not have any cancer symptoms, and

12         WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer

13  Society estimates that 9,950 new cases of colon cancer will be

14  diagnosed among Floridians during the year 2004, and

15         WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer

16  Society estimates that during the year 2004, the number of

17  cancer deaths due to colon cancer among Floridians will be

18  3,840, and

19         WHEREAS, complying with the American Cancer Society

20  colon cancer screening guidelines can lower the number of

21  cases by detecting and removing polyps that could become

22  cancerous, and

23         WHEREAS, colon cancer screenings may also prevent

24  deaths from the disease by finding the cancer early, when it

25  is highly curable, and

26         WHEREAS, when diagnosed with early, localized disease,

27  90 percent of people with colon cancer survive, NOW,

28  THEREFORE,

30  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 1         That the month of March 2004 is recognized as Colon

 2  Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and that all men and women

 3  in this state are encouraged to understand the risks

 4  associated with colon cancer, to take preventive steps to

 5  minimize those risks, and to undergo early detection

 6  procedures such as colonoscopy in compliance with the American

 7  Cancer Society's recommended colon cancer screening

 8  guidelines.
