2 A resolution in memory of Ruth Rales.

4 WHEREAS, Ruth Rales, whose passionate devotion to
5 family led her to espouse the cause of all families through
6 her gift to Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service, passed away on
7 Sunday, March 28, 2004, and
8 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rales left her name and the benefit of
9 her philanthropy to an agency that for the past 25 years has
10 offered to residents of South Palm Beach County a wide variety
11 of vital human services, and
12 WHEREAS, in 1990, Ruth and Norman Rales made a
13 significant contribution that allowed the construction of the
14 20,000-square-foot building that houses Ruth Rales Jewish
15 Family Service of South Palm Beach County (RRJFS), and
16 WHEREAS, Ruth Rales was born into a Russian-American
17 family of modest means in Pittsburgh, and met her future
18 husband, Norman Rales, through her family's dry-cleaning
19 business in Miami, and
20 WHEREAS, the Rales family moved to Pittsburgh and then
21 Washington D.C., where Norman, who grew up in an orphanage in
22 New York City, built a home-improvement business and assembled
23 a fortune, and
24 WHEREAS, Ruth and Norman Rales began coming to Florida
25 in the 1970s, initially staying in Boca Raton, where they
26 became part of the community, and they continued to divide
27 their time for years between Potomac, Maryland, and Florida,
28 moving into a residence in Hillsboro Beach in 1996, and
29 WHEREAS, Ruth Rales' concern for struggling families
30 continued throughout her life, and she remained involved in

1 the work of RRJFS and was honored along with her husband in
2 1999 at RRJFS Annual Friends of the Family Tribute Dinner, and
3 WHEREAS, Ruth Rales' life is celebrated by those who
4 knew and admired her and the many individuals she helped, as
5 well as by her husband of 55 years and their four children and
6 seven grandchildren, and
7 WHEREAS, the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service now
8 serves approximately 15,000 clients a year, offering to people
9 of all ages and backgrounds mental health and support programs
10 for individuals and families, senior services, case management
11 services, financial assistance, and community outreach, NOW,
12 THEREFORE,

14 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
15
16 That the Senate marks with mourning the passing of Ruth
17 Rales and expresses its grateful recognition of her gifts of
18 unsurpassed generosity to many thousands of residents of this
19 state.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
21 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Norman
22 Rales and his family as a token of the esteem of the Florida
23 Senate.
