1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to social studies instruction;
3 requiring the Department of Education to
4 conduct a study; requiring recommendations for
5 policy changes; providing an effective date.

7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. By January 15, 2005, the Department of
10 Education shall conduct a study to determine the status of
11 social studies instruction in public schools and social
12 science instruction in community colleges and state
13 universities. The study shall include:
14 (1) An analysis that documents compliance by each
15 school district with the social studies instruction as
16 required in section 1003.42, Florida Statutes.
17 (2) An analysis that examines the extent to which the
18 social science component of the general education requirements
19 of each community college and state university includes civics
20 instruction.
21 (3) Information on standards adopted by the State
22 Board of Education related to social studies instruction.
23 (4) Any recommendations for policy changes relating to
24 the study required in subsections (1)-(3).
25 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.

COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR
2 Senate Bill 426

4 The committee substitute replaces the contents of the bill
with a study by the Department of Education to determine the
5 status of social studies instruction in public schools and
social science instruction in community colleges and state
6 universities. The committee substitute specifies the contents
of the study.
