  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to relative caregivers;

  3         amending s. 39.5085, F.S.; providing that

  4         children may be placed in the care of a

  5         relative by either the dependency court or

  6         family court; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9  

10         Section 1.  Paragraph (c) of subsection (1) of section

11  39.5085, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:

12         39.5085  Relative Caregiver Program.--

13         (1)  It is the intent of the Legislature in enacting

14  this section to:

15         (c)  Recognize that permanency in the best interests of

16  the child can be achieved through a variety of permanency

17  options, including long-term relative custody, guardianship,

18  or adoption, by providing additional placement options and

19  incentives that will achieve permanency and stability for many

20  children who are otherwise at risk of foster care placement

21  because of abuse, abandonment, or neglect, but who may

22  successfully be able to be placed by either the dependency

23  court or family court in the care of the such relatives.

24         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.
