1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to high school graduation
3 options; amending s. 1003.429, F.S.; revising
4 credit requirements for the accelerated high
5 school graduation career preparatory program;
6 providing an effective date.

8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10 Section 1. Subsection (1) of section 1003.429, Florida
11 Statutes, is amended to read:
12 1003.429 Accelerated high school graduation options.--
13 (1) Beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, all
14 students scheduled to graduate in 2004 and thereafter may
15 select one of the following three high school graduation
16 options:
17 (a) Completion of the general requirements for high
18 school graduation pursuant to s. 1003.43;
19 (b) Completion of a 3-year standard college
20 preparatory program requiring successful completion of a
21 minimum of 18 academic credits in grades 9 through 12. The 18
22 credits shall be primary requirements and shall be distributed
23 as follows:
24 1. Four credits in English, with major concentration
25 in composition and literature;
26 2. Three credits in mathematics at the Algebra I level
27 or higher from the list of courses that qualify for state
28 university admission;
29 3. Three credits in natural science, two of which must
30 have a laboratory component;
31 4. Three credits in social sciences;

1 5. Two credits in the same second language unless the
2 student is a native speaker of or can otherwise demonstrate
3 competency in a language other than English. If the student
4 demonstrates competency in another language, the student may
5 replace the language requirement with two credits in other
6 academic courses; and
7 6. Three credits in electives; or
8 (c) Completion of a 3-year career preparatory program
9 requiring successful completion of a minimum of 18 academic
10 credits in grades 9 through 12. The 18 credits shall be
11 primary requirements and shall be distributed as follows:
12 1. Four credits in English, with major concentration
13 in composition and literature;
14 2. Three credits in mathematics, one of which must be
15 Algebra I;
16 3. Three credits in natural science, two of which must
17 have a laboratory component;
18 4. Three credits in social sciences;
19 5. Two credits in the same second language unless the
20 student is a native speaker of or can otherwise demonstrate
21 competency in a language other than English. If the student
22 demonstrates competency in another language, the student may
23 replace the language requirement with two credits in other
24 academic courses. For students scheduled to graduate in 2007
25 and thereafter, two credits in the same second language or two
26 credits in vocational education, one credit of which may be a
27 career class, shall be required; and
28 6. Three credits in electives. For students scheduled
29 to graduate in 2007 and thereafter, three elective credits in
30 a vocational program of study shall be required.
31 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2004.
