An act relating to the City of Lakeland, Polk County; |

amending the amended Charter of the City of Lakeland, |

1976; revising limitations on length of service of the |

Mayor and City Commissioners; providing an effective date. |

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |

Section 1. Section 11 of the amended Charter of the City |
10
|
of Lakeland, 1976, is amended to read: |

Section 11. Qualification of members. |
12
|
Members of the city commission shall have been residents of |
13
|
the city for one year, and have the qualifications of electors |
14
|
of the city. No one shall serve, or but for resignation would |
15
|
have served, more than twelve (12) consecutive years, or three |
16
|
(3) complete terms, whichever is longer,in the singular |
17
|
position of Mayor or Commissioner or more than sixteen (16) |
18
|
consecutive years, or four (4) complete terms, whichever is |
19
|
longer,in any combination of the positions of Mayor and |
20
|
Commissioner. The foregoing limitations shall not apply to any |
21
|
years or terms served prior to January 1, 1999, or to partial |
22
|
terms served thereafter, or to any years or termsserved beyond |
23
|
the foregoing limitations as a result of election as a write-in |
24
|
candidate. Elective officers of the city shall not hold any |
25
|
other elective public office, shall not serve as employees of |
26
|
the City of Lakeland during their terms of office and;shall not |
27
|
be interested in the profits or emoluments of any contract, |
28
|
work,or service for the city, and any such contract in which |
29
|
any officer or employee is, or may become interested,shall be |
30
|
void, and so declared by the city commission. Any member ceasing |
31
|
to possess the qualifications for office herein required shall |
32
|
forfeit his office. |

Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law. |
