| 2 | A resolution congratulating the Society of St. Andrew. | ||

| 4 | WHEREAS, since 1979, when it was founded in a sheep shed in | ||
| 5 | Big Island, Virginia, the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical | ||
| 6 | Christian ministry, has grown into the largest nonprofit hunger | ||
| 7 | relief organization of its type in the nation, each year | ||
| 8 | distributing throughout the United States some 40 million pounds | ||
| 9 | of nutritious produce that otherwise would have been left in the | ||
| 10 | fields to rot or to be plowed under after harvest, and | ||
| 11 | WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture | ||
| 12 | endorses the Society of St. Andrew as "the major gleaning | ||
| 13 | organization in the country," and, in her maiden speech on the | ||
| 14 | floor of the United States Senate, Senator Elizabeth Dole | ||
| 15 | directed considerable praise toward the society, lauding its | ||
| 16 | innovative, common-sense approach to hunger, and | ||
| 17 | WHEREAS, the help of volunteers from churches, synagogues, | ||
| 18 | scout troops, senior citizen groups, and other segments of | ||
| 19 | society enables the Society of St. Andrew to provide food to the | ||
| 20 | hungry for about a penny per serving, and last year alone these | ||
| 21 | volunteers numbered more than 43,000, 2,700 of whom served in | ||
| 22 | Florida to provide fresh produce to nearly every county of the | ||
| 23 | state, and | ||
| 24 | WHEREAS, in the year 2004, the Society of St. Andrew is | ||
| 25 | celebrating its 25th year as an organization providing food to | ||
| 26 | the nation's hungry, hope to its poor, and an opportunity of | ||
| 27 | service to its thousands of volunteers, NOW, THEREFORE, | ||
| 28 | |||
| 29 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of | ||
| 30 | Florida: | ||

| 32 | That the Society of St. Andrew is congratulated on its 25th | ||
| 33 | anniversary and is sincerely applauded for its remarkable | ||
| 34 | efforts in providing nutritious, satisfying food to those in our | ||
| 35 | country who would otherwise be without. | ||
| 36 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be | ||
| 37 | presented to Richard R. Mead, Regional Director, the Society of | ||
| 38 | St. Andrew, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed | ||
| 39 | herein. | ||
