WHEREAS, since 1979, when it was founded in a sheep shed in
Big Island, Virginia, the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical
Christian ministry, has grown into the largest nonprofit hunger
relief organization of its type in the nation, each year
distributing throughout the United States some 40 million pounds
of nutritious produce that otherwise would have been left in the
fields to rot or to be plowed under after harvest, and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture
endorses the Society of St. Andrew as "the major gleaning
organization in the country," and, in her maiden speech on the

directed considerable praise toward the society, lauding its
innovative, common-sense approach to hunger, and
WHEREAS, the help of volunteers from churches, synagogues,
scout troops, senior citizen groups, and other segments of

hungry for about a penny per serving, and last year alone these
volunteers numbered more than 43,000, 2,700 of whom served in
Florida to provide fresh produce to nearly every county of the
   state, and
WHEREAS, in the year 2004, the Society of St. Andrew is
celebrating its 25th year as an organization providing food to
