A resolution congratulating the Society of St. Andrew. |
3
4
WHEREAS, since 1979, when it was founded in a sheep shed in |
5
Big Island, Virginia, the Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical |
6
Christian ministry, has grown into the largest nonprofit hunger |
7
relief organization of its type in the nation, each year |
8
distributing throughout the United States some 40 million pounds |
9
of nutritious produce that otherwise would have been left in the |
10
fields to rot or to be plowed under after harvest, and |
11
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Agriculture |
12
endorses the Society of St. Andrew as "the major gleaning |
13
organization in the country," and, in her maiden speech on the |
14
floor of the United States Senate, Senator Elizabeth Dole |
15
directed considerable praise toward the society, lauding its |
16
innovative, common-sense approach to hunger, and |
17
WHEREAS, the help of volunteers from churches, synagogues, |
18
scout troops, senior citizen groups, and other segments of |
19
society enables the Society of St. Andrew to provide food to the |
20
hungry for about a penny per serving, and last year alone these |
21
volunteers numbered more than 43,000, 2,700 of whom served in |
22
Florida to provide fresh produce to nearly every county of the |
23
state, and |
24
WHEREAS, in the year 2004, the Society of St. Andrew is |
25
celebrating its 25th year as an organization providing food to |
26
the nation's hungry, hope to its poor, and an opportunity of |
27
service to its thousands of volunteers, NOW, THEREFORE, |
28
29
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
30

That the Society of St. Andrew is congratulated on its 25th |
33
anniversary and is sincerely applauded for its remarkable |
34
efforts in providing nutritious, satisfying food to those in our |
35
country who would otherwise be without. |
36
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
37
presented to Richard R. Mead, Regional Director, the Society of |
38
St. Andrew, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed |
39
herein. |
