House Resolution
2A resolution honoring Ms. Hazel Haley.
3
4     WHEREAS, Ms. Hazel Haley, Florida's longest-serving active
5teacher, has spent nearly 63 of her 65 remarkable years as an
6educator teaching English at Lakeland High School, and
7     WHEREAS, Ms. Haley, 86, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
8English from Florida Southern College in Lakeland and, after
9teaching briefly at Oviedo and Moore Haven High Schools,
10returned to her high school alma mater in Lakeland from which
11she had graduated in 1933, and
12     WHEREAS, indicative of the esteem in which she is held as
13one of the state's truly outstanding teachers, Ms. Haley is an
14inductee into the Polk County Schools Hall of Fame and a
15recipient of the Hollis Award for Community Service; there are
16scholarships in her honor at both Florida Southern College and
17Polk Community College; and a building on the Lakeland Senior
18High School campus proudly bears her name, and
19     WHEREAS, in addition to her being dearly cherished by the
20citizens of Polk County as their very own unique treasure, Ms.
21Haley has gained renown far beyond the borders of her local
22community and of her state, as evidenced by a recent two-day
23classroom visit and interview by a reporter from the Times of
24London in preparation for a feature story to appear in the
25paper's weekly educational supplement on May 23, NOW, THEREFORE,

27Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28Florida:

30     That the House of Representatives is truly honored to
31recognize and extend its sincere gratitude to Ms. Hazel Haley,
32whose influence as a truly committed teacher has touched
33thousands of lives in ways and numbers that cannot be reckoned.
34     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
35presented to Ms. Hazel Haley as a tangible token of the
36sentiments expressed herein.
