4 | WHEREAS, born in Coahoma, Mississippi, and raised in |
5 | Memphis, Tennessee, Mary B. Hooks was the owner of her own |
6 | insurance agency when she was elected to the West Palm Beach |
7 | City Commission in 1993 and was reelected twice, serving as the |
8 | president of the commission in 1996-1997, and |
9 | WHEREAS, in 1998, Mrs. Hooks, a Democrat, surprised her |
10 | friends by endorsing Jeb Bush for Governor, and |
11 | WHEREAS, after Jeb Bush was elected Governor, Mrs. Hooks |
12 | resigned her position on the commission to become the Secretary |
13 | of Labor and Employment Security, and |
14 | WHEREAS, after the Department of Labor and Employment |
15 | Security was abolished, Mrs. Hooks worked in the Agency for |
16 | Workforce Innovation as a liaison for community and business |
17 | groups, and |
18 | WHEREAS, in the fight against breast cancer she was a |
19 | committed volunteer and served as the honorary chairwoman of the |
20 | 13th annual Race For The Cure, and |
21 | WHEREAS, Governor Bush said that Mary Hooks "embodied the |
22 | true spirit of public service coupled with strong experience as |
23 | a successful business owner and community leader," NOW, |

26 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
27 | Florida: |

29 | That the House of Representatives pauses in its |
30 | deliberations to honor the memory of Mary Hooks. |
31 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
32 | presented to her husband, Lee Hooks, as a tangible token of the |
33 | sentiments expressed herein. |
