House Resolution
2A resolution honoring the memory of Mary B. Hooks.

4     WHEREAS, born in Coahoma, Mississippi, and raised in
5Memphis, Tennessee, Mary B. Hooks was the owner of her own
6insurance agency when she was elected to the West Palm Beach
7City Commission in 1993 and was reelected twice, serving as the
8president of the commission in 1996-1997, and
9     WHEREAS, in 1998, Mrs. Hooks, a Democrat, surprised her
10friends by endorsing Jeb Bush for Governor, and
11     WHEREAS, after Jeb Bush was elected Governor, Mrs. Hooks
12resigned her position on the commission to become the Secretary
13of Labor and Employment Security, and
14     WHEREAS, after the Department of Labor and Employment
15Security was abolished, Mrs. Hooks worked in the Agency for
16Workforce Innovation as a liaison for community and business
17groups, and
18     WHEREAS, in the fight against breast cancer she was a
19committed volunteer and served as the honorary chairwoman of the
2013th annual Race For The Cure, and
21     WHEREAS, Governor Bush said that Mary Hooks "embodied the
22true spirit of public service coupled with strong experience as
23a successful business owner and community leader," NOW,
24THEREFORE,

26Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
27Florida:

29     That the House of Representatives pauses in its
30deliberations to honor the memory of Mary Hooks.
31     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
32presented to her husband, Lee Hooks, as a tangible token of the
33sentiments expressed herein.
