1	House Resolution
2	A resolution supporting the goals and ideals of the
3	National Eating Disorders Association.

5	WHEREAS, an estimated 5 million to 10 million people in the
6	United States suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia
7	nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, and
8	WHEREAS, eating disorders are more common among women,
9	although an increasing number of men also suffer from these
10	disorders, and
11	WHEREAS, at least 0.5 percent of adolescent and adult
12	females in the United States will suffer from anorexia nervosa
13	in their lifetimes, at least 1.1 percent of adolescent and adult
14	females will suffer from bulimia nervosa in their lifetimes, and
15	an estimated 2 to 5 percent of both sexes experience binge
16	eating disorder in any given 6-month period, and
17	WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with serious
18	physical health consequences, including irregular heartbeat,
19	heart disease and heart failure, kidney failure, osteoporosis,
20	gastric rupture, peptic ulcer, tooth decay, obesity, gall
21	bladder disease, diabetes, and death, and
22	WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with substantial
23	psychological problems, including depression, substance abuse,
24	and suicide, with anorexia nervosa having the highest premature
25	mortality rate of any mental illness, and
26	WHEREAS, shame, guilt, and misunderstanding often afflict a
27	person who suffers from an eating disorder, thus preventing
28	treatment of the disorder, and
29	WHEREAS, the goals and ideals of the National Eating
30	Disorders Association and its member organizations are to
31	increase public awareness of eating disorders and to promote
32	healthful eating habits and a healthy body image, NOW,
33	THEREFORE,

35	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
36	Florida:

38	That the House of Representatives supports the goals and
39	ideals of the National Eating Disorders Association to increase
40	public awareness and expand access to appropriate and effective
41	treatment of eating disorders.
