House Resolution
2A resolution supporting the goals and ideals of the
3National Eating Disorders Association.

5     WHEREAS, an estimated 5 million to 10 million people in the
6United States suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia
7nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, and
8     WHEREAS, eating disorders are more common among women,
9although an increasing number of men also suffer from these
10disorders, and
11     WHEREAS, at least 0.5 percent of adolescent and adult
12females in the United States will suffer from anorexia nervosa
13in their lifetimes, at least 1.1 percent of adolescent and adult
14females will suffer from bulimia nervosa in their lifetimes, and
15an estimated 2 to 5 percent of both sexes experience binge
16eating disorder in any given 6-month period, and
17     WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with serious
18physical health consequences, including irregular heartbeat,
19heart disease and heart failure, kidney failure, osteoporosis,
20gastric rupture, peptic ulcer, tooth decay, obesity, gall
21bladder disease, diabetes, and death, and
22     WHEREAS, eating disorders are associated with substantial
23psychological problems, including depression, substance abuse,
24and suicide, with anorexia nervosa having the highest premature
25mortality rate of any mental illness, and
26     WHEREAS, shame, guilt, and misunderstanding often afflict a
27person who suffers from an eating disorder, thus preventing
28treatment of the disorder, and
29     WHEREAS, the goals and ideals of the National Eating
30Disorders Association and its member organizations are to
31increase public awareness of eating disorders and to promote
32healthful eating habits and a healthy body image, NOW,
33THEREFORE,

35Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
36Florida:

38     That the House of Representatives supports the goals and
39ideals of the National Eating Disorders Association to increase
40public awareness and expand access to appropriate and effective
41treatment of eating disorders.
