| 3 | Rights Act and the 35th Anniversary of the Florida |
| 4 | Commission on Human Relations and commending the |
| 5 | Commission on its many significant accomplishments. |

| 7 | WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave the Federal |
| 8 | Government the right to end segregation, and |
| 9 | WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature, pursuant to the Civil |
| 10 | Rights Act, established the Florida Commission on Human |
| 11 | Relations, and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations promotes |
| 13 | freedom from discrimination under the Civil Rights Act, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, the act includes, but is not limited to, the |
| 15 | elimination of discrimination based on race, color, religion, |
| 16 | gender, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations works to |
| 18 | identify and eliminate discrimination in public lodging, food |
| 19 | service establishments, and certain private clubs, and |
| 20 | WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations promotes |
| 21 | and encourages mutual understanding and respect among members of |
| 22 | all economic, social, racial, religious, and ethnic groups, and |
| 23 | WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations |
| 24 | endeavors to eliminate discrimination against and antagonism |
| 25 | among religious, racial, and ethnic groups, and their members, |
| 26 | and |
| 27 | WHEREAS, more than 70,000 civil rights investigations have |
| 28 | been closed, more than $15 million has been negotiated through |
| 29 | the Commission's Mediation Unit, and thousands of Floridians |
| 30 | have been impacted through the Commission's Community Relations |
| 31 | Service Unit, and |
| 32 | WHEREAS, the year 2004 marks the 40th Anniversary of the |
| 33 | Civil Rights Act and the 35th Anniversary of the Florida |
| 34 | Commission on Human Relations, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 36 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 37 | Florida: |

| 39 | That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the |
| 40 | 40th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and the 35th |
| 41 | Anniversary of the Florida Commission on Human Relations and |
| 42 | commends the Commission on its energetic work and its many |
| 43 | significant accomplishments. |
