House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the 40th Anniversary of the Civil
3Rights Act and the 35th Anniversary of the Florida
4Commission on Human Relations and commending the
5Commission on its many significant accomplishments.

7     WHEREAS, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave the Federal
8Government the right to end segregation, and
9     WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature, pursuant to the Civil
10Rights Act, established the Florida Commission on Human
11Relations, and
12     WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations promotes
13freedom from discrimination under the Civil Rights Act, and
14     WHEREAS, the act includes, but is not limited to, the
15elimination of discrimination based on race, color, religion,
16gender, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status, and
17     WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations works to
18identify and eliminate discrimination in public lodging, food
19service establishments, and certain private clubs, and
20     WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations promotes
21and encourages mutual understanding and respect among members of
22all economic, social, racial, religious, and ethnic groups, and
23     WHEREAS, the Florida Commission on Human Relations
24endeavors to eliminate discrimination against and antagonism
25among religious, racial, and ethnic groups, and their members,
26and
27     WHEREAS, more than 70,000 civil rights investigations have
28been closed, more than $15 million has been negotiated through
29the Commission's Mediation Unit, and thousands of Floridians
30have been impacted through the Commission's Community Relations
31Service Unit, and
32     WHEREAS, the year 2004 marks the 40th Anniversary of the
33Civil Rights Act and the 35th Anniversary of the Florida
34Commission on Human Relations, NOW, THEREFORE,

36Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
37Florida:

39     That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the
4040th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and the 35th
41Anniversary of the Florida Commission on Human Relations and
42commends the Commission on its energetic work and its many
43significant accomplishments.
